So one day Andrew was sitting on the kitchen floor by his high chair, when all of a sudden he started screaming! I ran over and thought the only that might have happened was that he'd pulled the chair just enough to pinch his toe under it. So I pushed the chair up a little, unsure of if that was the problem or not. Well, a couple days later this toe was so red it was almost purple. I thought he'd broken it! I couldn't believe it, he certainly could not have moved the chair enough to have broken his toe! But that is really what it looked like. But, me having broken dozens of toes, know that they don't do anything for it - they just tape it to the next toe until it heals. So, I didn't take him to the doctor or anything. Well, a few more days passed and the nail fell off and the skin was coming off like he was a molting snake or something. It was so weird!!! Well, he had his 9 month visit coming up and when I showed the doctor this picture, because it was doing much better by then, he told me that he'd had a staph infection in his toe! Now it all made sense! Just the slight pressure of the chair on his toe was extremely painful because he'd had an infection starting that I hadn't noticed yet. The purple was just the body fighting the infection (like I know all too well from Seth and Levi, sadly). Dr. Johnson said that the peeling skin was the dead give away. When the skin peels like that, it's because of an infection! Oh, poor kiddo! I felt so bad for him. But, at least we know for next time (hopefully there isn't a next time!)
